Are Tradie Business Coaches a Scam? An Honest Answer From Inside
Short answer: Some are. Plenty of trade coaching is recycled fluff sold by kids in headsets who have never held a tool, and a fair bit of it is a straight-up scam. But a good coach is one of the best returns a trade business owner will ever get. The whole game is knowing how to tell one from the other before you hand over a cent.
Straight up, some of it is a scam
I coach tradies for a living, so you'd expect me to defend the industry. I'm not going to. A big chunk of business coaching aimed at trade blokes is rubbish. You've seen it. The 25 year old guru in a hired Lambo. The slick webinar that ends with a $15,000 program and a countdown timer. The bloke selling you scaling advice who has never quoted a job, never chased an invoice, never had a subbie no-show on a Monday. A lot of them just repackage the same generic content and sell it to plumbers, sparkies and chippies as if it was built for them. It wasn't.
The red flags of a dud coach
- No trade experience. They've never run a trade business or worked on the tools. Ask them what the gross margin was on their last job. Watch them stall.
- A headset and a script. You get handed to a salesperson, not the coach. The first call is 45 minutes of pressure and a discount that vanishes at midnight.
- One price, take it or leave it. Fifteen grand up front, paid today, or the deal's gone. A real coach lets you sleep on it.
- Recycled, generic content. Modules about mindset and funnels that could be sold to a dentist or a real estate agent with the logo swapped out.
- All vibes, no numbers. They talk about freedom and cars, not labour recovery, quoting systems or your actual break-even.
- No proof, no references. No case studies from real trade businesses, and nobody you can ring to ask how it went.
- They dodge the ROI question. Ask what this will make or save you and you get motivation instead of a number.
What good looks like, and the questions that reveal it
A real coach has been where you are. They've priced jobs, carried wages through a slow winter, and pulled a business out of a hole. They talk in numbers, not slogans. They'll show you where the money is leaking before they ask for a dollar. And they back themselves. The strategy session is free, and my first paid session finds at least $100,000 of opportunity in your business, guaranteed, or you get your money back. That's skin in the game, not a countdown timer. Before you pay anyone, run them through the questions below. The right coach answers every one without flinching. A dud changes the subject.
- Have you actually run a trade business? Which one, and what did it turn over? You want scars, not slides.
- What specific return can I expect, and how do you measure it? A good coach ties everything back to your numbers.
- Can I ring three tradies you've coached? Real clients, real trades, a real phone call. Not testimonials sitting on a landing page.
- What happens if it doesn't work? Listen for a guarantee. If all the risk sits with you, walk away.
- What will you have me change in the first 30 days? You want something you can do on Monday, like fixing your charge-out rate. Our free calculator at /tools/charge-out-rate-calculator sorts that in ten minutes, not a 12 week journey.
- Do you know my numbers before you pitch me? Anyone quoting a price before they understand your margins is guessing with your money.
Common questions
Are business coaches a scam?
Not all of them, but plenty are. The scam version is a salesperson in a headset selling a $15,000 generic program with a countdown timer and no trade experience behind it. A genuine coach has run a business, talks in numbers, gives you references you can ring, and backs the work with a guarantee. The industry has a rubbish problem, so judge the individual, not the label.
How do I know if a tradie business coach is legit?
Ask three questions before you pay. Have you run a trade business yourself? What specific return will this make or save me, and how do you measure it? Can I speak to three tradies you've coached? A legit coach answers all three straight away. A dud gives you motivation instead of a number and steers you toward a discount that expires tonight.
Is business coaching worth it for a trade business?
It is worth it when the return clearly beats the fee. For most trade businesses the fastest gains are in pricing, quoting and recovering labour, and those often add tens of thousands to the bottom line for very little cost. The trick is to only pay a coach who can point to the specific dollars before you commit, ideally with a money-back guarantee if they do not deliver.
How much should a tradie business coach cost?
There is no fixed rate, but be wary of any coach demanding a big lump sum on the first call with a deadline attached. What matters more than the sticker price is the return. A $10,000 program that reliably adds $100,000 is cheap. A $2,000 program that changes nothing is expensive. Always weigh the fee against the measurable result, and never pay under pressure.
