Tradie charge-out rate calculator

Most tradies quote off a number they made up years ago. Punch in your real figures and see your true cost per hour, the rate you should actually charge, and what undercharging is costing you a year.

Your numbers

Billable hours a year—
Your true cost per billable hour (break-even)—
What you should charge (with margin)—
—
left on the table each year

Fill in your numbers to see where you stand.

This is a guide, not accounting advice. It uses the figures you enter to estimate a cost-based charge-out rate. Your real rate should also reflect the value you deliver and what your market bears.

How the calculator works

Your charge-out rate has to cover far more than a wage. We take your total yearly costs and divide them by the hours you actually bill (not the hours you work) to get your true cost per hour, your break-even. Then we add your profit margin to get the rate you should charge. The gap between that and what you charge now, times your billable hours, is the money walking out the door each year.
