Your first hire: cost or investment?
Short answer: the most expensive employee in your business is you, still doing low-value work. Your first hire buys back the time to actually run and grow the business. Hire for your biggest bottleneck.
Most tradies frame the first hire as a cost they can't afford. That's the wrong question.
The question that's actually right
Not can I afford to hire, but what is not hiring costing me? Every hour you spend on $50 work is an hour you're not quoting, pricing, following up or leading. That gap is the real cost.
Signs you're ready
- You're turning away work you could take
- You're the bottleneck on every job
- You're doing tasks a cheaper person could do
- Quotes and follow-up are slipping because you're flat out
Who to hire first
Hire for your biggest bottleneck. If admin and quoting are drowning you, that's an office or 2IC hire. If you physically can't get to the work, it's another set of hands so you can step back and run things.
Hire slow, set them up to win
- Define the role clearly before you advertise.
- Document how the work is done so onboarding isn't just watching you.
- Give them real ownership, not just tasks.
- Expect a ramp-up; a good hire pays for themselves, but not on day one.
Common questions
When should a tradie hire their first employee?
When you're consistently turning away work, acting as the bottleneck, or spending your time on tasks someone cheaper could do. Those are signs the business has outgrown one person.
Should I hire an apprentice or an admin person first?
It depends on your bottleneck. If paperwork and quoting are the problem, admin frees you up fastest. If it's capacity on site, put on hands so you can step back.
How do I afford my first hire?
Price so the business can carry the role, and remember the hire creates capacity to take on more of the work you're currently turning away.
